What We Do

At the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy, we are reinventing deaf education for the 21st century. Children who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or who need American Sign Language to navigate their world deserve a future full of possibility. Learning from other models of deaf education, the ASLA is driven to reduce feelings of isolation that stem from separating children from their families and the broader community.

ASLA is the nation’s first and only state-certified ASL/English dual-language school. We bring deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students together in an inclusive learning community where shared language inspires, unites, and empowers. ALL students acquire the high level language skills they need to succeed in the world, fostering a more inclusive and better connected community.

Our bold, 21st-century curriculum offers all students access to rigorous, individualized academics, support services, and powerful language instruction in both English and ASL. By centering inclusion and connection in everything we do, from curriculum to community building, we are reimagining what deaf education can be and creating one united community where all children can build a sense of belonging and a fulfilling future.

Nationally Recognized as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School

ASLA awarded for a Unified Champion School by Special Olympics for fostering an environment where students with and without disabilities compete together. ASLA’s involvement in Special Olympics is part of the school’s culture and commitment to creating an inclusive environment for its students.

P.E.A.R. Institute Partnership

We are the only school in New Mexico to work with Harvard’s P.E.A.R Institute in developing a system of school-embedded social-emotional programming for all students. As the leader in deaf education reform in New Mexico, the ASL Academy continues to pursue options which will enrich the lives of our students with special needs.

Our partnership with Dr. Gil Noam and the P.E.A.R. Institute (a collaboration between Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital) provides an innovative assessment tool that will further the ASL Academy's mission by designing programs which ensure children are healthier mentally, emotionally, and academically.

Partnering with APD: A TEDx Talk with Rafe Martinez

In an effort to create meaningful and positive connections between the deaf community and the Albuquerque Police Department, the ASL Academy opened its doors to APD on a daily basis. The school is a place for them to grab a cup of coffee, take a break from the heat, or use the wifi to write reports. Students have an opportunity to connect with officers and learn about their work and the officers learn about the deaf community to increase trust and understanding between the two groups.
