American Sign Language (ASL) Classes

In our constant quest to unite the deaf and hearing communities we are proud to offer ASL classes for all levels of learners to all of our school families and the greater community alike! Classes are offered on Tuesday evenings in 8 week sessions four times a year.

Free For ASLA Families

The ASLA offers FREE sign language classes to ASLA family members to assist in promoting clear communication and support for ASL Academy students. ASLA also offers free classes to the parents and families of deaf and hard of hearing children who attend other ASL programs that encourage inclusion and facilitate clearer communication throughout the ASL community.

ASL Community Classes

The ASLA offers sign language classes for the community to learn or improve ASL skills and immerse themselves in the language.

ASLA Stories

Therese Garcia’s sons, 12-year-old twins Jared and Forrest and nine-year-old Noah, play chess with their uncle on weekends. They learn new strategies while teasing and joking.

“I grew up an only child and wondered what it would be like to have a close relationship to siblings,” says Therese. “So it was important for my sons to be surrounded by family.”

Her three boys are hearing, and their uncle Tim is deaf.

When Therese found the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy (ASL Academy), it was the first and only school that would allow her hearing sons to learn American Sign Language alongside English academics. “It’s not just about one child, it’s the whole family we were trying to keep together,” she says.

Now her sons are expert members of the ASL Academy chess team and can brag about their wins to their uncle in sign language. “This school has helped build a family connection that wouldn’t have been there otherwise,” Therese says.

For Community Members

ASLA offers sign language classes to members of the community who may be brushing up on tried and true skills, looking to learn ASL for the first time, or just looking to immerse themselves in a new language and culture.
